This crush-anthem has a video that subverts the male-gaze deliberately and we love it, writes Neha Pant

Ever since it was released four days ago, U.K. bases singer, Charli XCX’s self-directed video for her song, Boys, has racked up nearly 5 million views on YouTube. The reason for this is probably the fact that XCX has managed to do nearly the impossible, bring together some of the hottest men in the show business right now and make them do things in a “slideshow of alternative masculinity.” From reading books, to throwing confetti, to eating pancakes, cuddling with teddy bears and puppies and yes, combing their hair—all the while dripping in millennial pink, sometimes they’re wearing and other times, it’s the backdrop. Totally innocent. But also so damn sexy.

In an interview with BBC Radio the singer stated her reasons for the video, “They’re basically doing all the sexy things that girls usually do in videos. I started thinking about all the guys that I’ve worked with or met [throughout all] my years in the industry… I just want to flip the male gaze on its head and have you guys do the sexy stuff.”
