What to expect at the traveling music festival
Known for its impressive line-up that always has Asia’s freshest talent, New Wave Asia has been the darling of the indie music festival scene. Organised by Mumbai record label ennui.BOMB, the festival is kicking off its fourth edition in its hometown Mumbai this week (it was earlier hosted in Goa, Bengaluru and New Delhi). There are seven international acts lined up this year, along with local indie musicians of-course. While there is a lot to look forward to, there are also many who will miss the live vibe of the festival. Our playlist this months is dedicated to those music fiends who can’t make it and are having major FOMO. Here is our attempt at a musical introduction to the traveling festival, one band at a time. Tripwire
You cannot have an indie music festival without Mumbai based Tripwire performing live. Period. These guys are legendary in their rejection of mainstream.
ViceVersa
Manas Ullas and Rohit Pereira aka P-Man first came together to work on this electronic project in 2011. Ever since they have drawn influences from across genres to create experimental sounds that have lead them to collaborate with some of India’s biggest names in Independent music. From Keshav Dhar of Skyharbor to Sidd Coutto (Zero / Tough On Tobacco), to even Siddharth Basrur (Goddess Gagged).
Ooberfuse
This London duo (Hal St John and Cherrie Anderson) is known for its well-crafted songs delivered through powerful, emotional and heartfelt vocals combined with east-meets-west electronic music.
Hibari
Tsutomu Noguchi also known by his stage name Hibari, is a Japanese punk artist and is one of the biggest emerging talents of Japan. Much of his musical genre is still in its nascent stages in India and Hibari is here to give it a push.
Dr.Eggs
The basic elements of the DR.EGGS experience are—angular synths, driving bass, aggro guitar and complex rhythms all topped by infectious melodies, slick raps and highly personal lyrics.
The Note
A 4-piece band from Bangkok, Thailand and they play pop-rock music with a pretty energetic live set.
The Baby Boomrs
Bhutan’s first western style band which is inspired by the Beatles, need we say more!
JVNR
JVNR is the brainchild of Jun Roh of project IMPAIR and the leader of WHOwho. This Seoul based artist is interested in synth pop which has inspired him to experiment with electro-pop music that everyone can listen to it. JVNR has always insisted on creating music with real instruments, and it is exactly this commitment that is what makes his songs original.
Flying Kik
This band from Bhutan started as a cover band but slowly progressed towards originals which are still a W.I.P. They play Rock, Hip Hop, Metal, Reggae and recently performed at a K-Pop super concert in Thimpu.
The Riot Peddlers
India’s first hard-core punk act. Not for the fainthearted.
Diarchy
Prakash Rawat and Gaurrav Tiwari from Bengaluru formed Diarchy in 2015 and have since mastered raw, riff based, hard rock sounds.
B-Cube
Bhavesh Sharma aka B-Cube is India’s finest beat boxer, even representing the country at the Asia beatboxing championship this year.
