The virtual band’s new song is called Hallelujah Money and features Benjamin Clementine

A blur reunion, teasers and even a solo album later, Damon Alburn has finally released the first song from his virtual band, Gorillaz. The lead singer of the British rock band Blur founded Gorillaz in 2010 and the band is commonly represented by a cast of cartoon characters. While its last album Plastic Beach was not overtly political, the timing and theme of the new song hints at the fact that it was meant to be a protest anthem for the new president of the United States. Hallelujah Money features the singer Benjamin Clementine in a golden elevator as images of the KKK, Animal Farm and other politically charged visuals flash behind him.

The song was accompanied with a message from the band’s animated bassist, Murdoch,  “In these dark times, we all need someone to look up to. Me. That’s why I’m giving you this new Gorillaz song, a lightning bolt of truth in a black night. You’re welcome. Now piss on! The new album’s not gonna write itself.”
